The last pear to drop

This might look like a picture of a chimney to you, and indeed it is, but that is not what you are supposed to be looking at.

Study the picture carefully and you will see, at the base of the chimney pot, a pear. This is the last pear on my neighbour's pear tree, clinging on valiantly where his friends have already plummeted to earth.

Now this is possibly the highest point in the tree, and from where that pear is looking, it's going to seem like a long way down. When he tumbles, as he knows he inevitably will, there is every chance that the velocity gathered by the fall will smash him to tiny pieces on the ground below. If he survives that, he'll get eaten or even worse, rot away, eaten by the worms.

It's a lose lose situation really. No wonder he's hanging in there.
